Commentary on the Instrumentum Laboris: Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera on Chapter I of Part III

Cardinal Rivera, Archbishop of Mexico City, offers us his comments on Chapter I of Part III of the Instrumentum Laboris, which addresses the theme of "Family and Evangelization" in preparation for October's Synod.

"The great mission of the Church—he recalls—is to proclaim the Gospel. Evangelization is Christ's presence in all of reality until He becomes all in all. (...) This announcement cannot be retained outside a reality that is as essential as that of the family."
Indeed, it acts as a kind of cultural mediation, because it is able to express coherently both the faithfulness and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to contemporary man.
The family, he says, is "subject and object of evangelization:" subject because it is the crucial harbinger of the hope and joyful witness of the beauty of its calling; object because it is the recipient of God's grace and salvific work that redeems and heals, at every moment, the human being's inevitable fragility, and because, by listening to the Word, it rediscovers "its creaturely, sacramental dimension" and missionary call within society.
