More than twenty thousand engaged couples are expected on Friday, February 14th, 2014, in St. Peter's Square for the audience reserved for them with Pope Francis, organized by the Pontifical Council for the Family. They are coming from 28 countries around the world, and what they have in common is the fact that they have chosen to get married in the coming months. “The numerical success of the initiative, absolutely unpredictable just three weeks ago
, — says H. E. Mons. Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Dicastery — shows that there are young people going against the tide, who want their love to last forever and to be blessed by God, even though the world in which they live believes that the bonds don’t last forever and that it’s good for each person to look after himself.”
The audience will begin at 11:00 am. During the first hour the engaged couples will prepare for the meeting with the Holy Father, by retracing the essential stages to a love story, through lived experiences, with songs and poems about love. At 12:00 noon, the Holy Father will arrive in the square and speak with three engaged couples. The questions of these couples concern today’s difficulties when it comes to making a final choice, the quality of the Christian family, and the style to choose for the celebration of the sacrament of marriage. “Today — Mons. Paglia continues — the choice of marriage is constantly being postponed until all the problems are resolved. In reality, people get married in order to build the future together, to solve problems together, and to build a home together, for themselves and for their children. Of course, public leaders should be much more attentive to supporting, through appropriate family and work policies, the choice of two young people to get married, because a family built the youth is also a good asset for society.”
The audience will conclude with a moment of prayer (a prayer for the engaged has been composed especially for this event) and the blessing of the Holy Father. A special gift will be given to all the couples for their wedding celebration.
The entire event (from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm) will be broadcast live on Vatican Radio, on the Vatican Television Centre and on connected television networks.
