"The priorities of our Union‘s institutions are too often placed in the wrong order: in the current European landscape, in the presence of an economic crisis of which everybody pays the costs; and facing the threat of a demographic winter, which some Member States are already painfully going through, the family appears as a source of light," says the European Federation of Catholic Family Associations, denouncing that, since the beginning of the legislative term launched one year ago in Strasbourg, the Parliament has not devoted appropriate attention to issues of life and relationships between men and women, in spite of what was declared several times during the campaign.
 
Next September, the European Parliament will discuss two reports featuring very clearly oriented contents: one on assisted suicide, drawn up by MEP Laura Ferrara, and the other on the promotion of gender ideology, drafted by the Committee on Women‘s Rights (FEMM).
"On the side of the European Commission, ―the Federation continues―Vice-President Timmermans made several declarations on the wish of imposing the recognition of unions and marriages between persons of the same sex on those Member States that have not introduced similar legislations. Eight Member States currently have constitutions which define marriage as the union between a man and a woman (Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia). At the service of the Union and of its Member States, the Commission does not have any mandate to impose on them changes to their customs and to their respective constitutions, a fortiori on matters related to the definition of family, the fundamental cell of every society, founded on the marriage between a man and a woman."
In addition, the Federation noted that it is following "with great attention" the process of the selection of the new Director of the EU Fundamental rights Agency (FRA): "as the parliamentary hearing revealed, the three candidates presented by the Commission to the Council and to the Parliament all have the same ideological profile, which calls into question and undermines the transparency of the selection process and the necessary impartiality of the FRA, supposed to monitor the respect for the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union at the EU level and in the Member States."
