South Africa: The many poverties experienced by families   versione testuale

Welcomed by the PCF during their ad limina visit, the South African Bishops were invited by the Pope to be present with the people in the places where they themselves live because of the many pastoral challenges: decreasing numbers of children, the pain of abortion, separation and divorce, and domestic violence.

The South African bishops emphasized the existence of marked cultural and social differences in South Africa stemming from the complex history of the country. They spoke of how there are diverse types of “family”, with many single parent situations. They recalled also the theme of pastoral care of orphans, whose numbers have greatly grown in the past years due to AIDS and violence against women. The bishops expressed interest regarding the discussion of the status of the divorced and remarried in the upcoming Synod. The bishops requested assistance in addressing the themes of marriage preparation as well as “gender” ideologies.
